June/July 2024 – Sports Dentistry
In honor of the approaching Summer Olympics in Paris, Contour explores the exciting world of sports dentistry. First up is former-professional-athlete-turned-dentist Donovan Gilmore (Meharry ’27), who combines his sports and dentistry experiences into one unique insight on the physics of mouthguards. Julian Jones (Meharry ’24), talks about his journey from NFL pro to dental student and how sports gave him the confidence to pursue dentistry. Shivani Shah’s (Penn ’25) interview with the official dentist of the Philadelphia Eagles shares stories from the field, telling Contour readers that sports dentists “must be ready for anything.”
In her final editor’s note, “Grateful for a Tenure of Teamwork,” ASDA Editor in Chief Roslyn Joseph (Dental College of Georgia ’24), writes, “This issue of Contour takes its inspiration from the Olympic spirit and delves into the world of overcoming adversity, a theme that resonates deeply with athletes and dentists.” Joseph also announced that Katherine Burkett (Louisiana ’25) has been named Contour’s new editor in chief.
