Researchers have found evidence that wild savannah elephants in Kenya use individual "names" or vocal labels to call out to each other. The researchers recorded 625 elephant calls and rumbles and used a machine learning model to predict which specific elephant a rumble was directed towards. When the researchers played recordings of these vocal label rumbles to wild elephants, the elephants responded more quickly and moved towards the sound of their own "names." While the research is not yet peer-reviewed, if confirmed, it could have significant implications for our understanding of animal communication and the evolution of language.
