The article reports that the informal talks between British Prime Minister Tony Blair and U.S. President George W. Bush in preparation for the July G8 meeting might have attracted little attention in climate science circles were it not for the coincidental airing of several climate-related news items. While the President called for increased conservation and efficiency in fossil fuel use, development of alternative fuels, and technology sharing with developing nations, his focus was on the security of energy supplies, rather than on the potential environmental impacts of unlimited fossil fuel consumption. Additional measures proposed by the President to provide national energy security included expansion of U.S. refining capacity, and developing untapped oil resources, such as those in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.
