The article assesses the importance of woodland landscape locations for both local communities and conservation in Gorongosa and Muanza Districts, Sofala Province, Mozambique. During the process of developing a management plan for Gorongosa National Park, the presence of people living within the Park and its immediate vicinity was identified as a major management problem. Here the authors develop and test an approach for estimating local importance scores for landscape units, and then relate them to formal biodiversity conservation importance scores.
