Columbia University has been in New York City since its founding in 1754. The ties of Columbia University with Harlem, New York City, and the university's surrounding community exist not just through the university's alumni but also through current students, faculty, neighbors and many partnerships between them, as of January 8, 2004. A modern university cannot be detached from its neighbors. Columbia has been building relationships in Harlem for more than 50 years. The university also take enormous pride in the longstanding affiliation with Harlem Hospital, a critical part of the university community that must remain strong.
