The first of November brought with it some chilly news for those stalwarts who maintained that Thomas Jefferson did not have a sexual relationship with his slave Sally Heming. The debate over Jefferson's conduct and legacy has been particularly sharp over the past couple of years, in various magazines and with the publication of Joseph Ellis's American Sphinx: The Character of Thomas Jefferson, which won the National BookAward. And before that Conor Cruise O'Brien's The Long Affair: Thomas Jefferson and the French Revolution and Annette Gordon-Reed's Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemings: An American Controversy and other works.
