Andrographis paniculata, the "King of Bitters," has a long history of traditional use in both Ayurvedic medicine and Traditional Chinese Medicine. This article reviews clinical evidence for the use of A. paniculata in a variety of clinical conditions, as well as safety and pharmacokinetics. Andrographis has a number of immune-supportive or immune-modulating effects. It has been clinically assessed for its ability to reduce the severity or duration of upper respiratory tract infections. It also has anti-inflammatory properties. This anti-inflammatory effect, in combination with immune-regulating properties, make this herbal medicine an attractive adjunct for autoimmune conditions, and A. paniculata has been clinically studied for its effects in people with multiple sclerosis, ulcerative colitis, and rheumatoid arthritis.
