Karen Mundy is a Professor of Education Policy and Leadership at the University of Toronto, and an award-winning scholar in the field of International Education Development. Her career has included sustained engagement and leadership in international development organizations, most notably the Global Partnership for Education and UNESCO. In this piece she reflects on current challenges and opportunities for our field derived from three main autobiographical streams: her life as a scholar; within international development organizations; and her private or personal life. • Our field is more bifurcated today than it ever has been, yet it urgently needs to engage with global crisis of increasing scale. • International organisations deserve our attention because they are important anchors in efforts to address these crises. • Careers that traverse both "maker" and "manager" roles can help to bridge the divide between research and practice in international development, and across disciplines. • My life-story illustrates how a career as scholar-practitioner evolves, including the navigation of gendered challenges. • It also highlights the importance of institutions and social safety nets across the life-course and their relevance to our field.
