This article reports that diagnostic challenges and evolving treatments for insomnia were the topics of a symposium at the 17th Annual U.S. Psychiatric and Mental Health Congress. For patients to be diagnosed with insomnia, they must exhibit daytime impairment as a result of difficulty falling asleep, difficulty staying asleep or non-restorative sleep. At one time or another, one-third of U.S. adults have had difficulties with insomnia, have had difficulties with insomnia, with 9% being chronic cases in which patients reported difficulty sleeping an average of 16 nights per month.
