The study is about determining the language preference of the primary ethnolinguistic groups within the University of the Philippines Visayas (UPV) in the town of Miag-ao. The study aimed to address questions and concerns about the possibility of communication problems in such a university due to the presence of citizens from different ethnolinguistic groups. The study was conducted during the pandemic so the researcher deemed it best to use the Key Informant Interview (KII) method for the online interviews. The study resulted in the identification of the most frequently-used languages by the community members of UP Visayas-Miag-ao to better understand each other, to gauge their readiness to learn a new language, and to establish the advantages and limitations of having a culture of code-switching or language transfer in such a university. The results highlight the importance of accepting all ethnolinguistic groups in the multi-language set-up of UP Visayas for the preservation of their native language, the opportunity provided to learn a new language and culture, and for the practical use of Hiligaynon as the lingua franca of the region, of Filipino as the national language, and of English as one of the official languages of the country in their daily transactions and conversations.
