A multicenter, retrospective study involving 28 patients with macrophage activation syndrome found that various toxicities and off-label use of medications were associated with their treatment. The patients, who had a history of systemic juvenile idiopathic arthritis, atopic dermatitis, or central venous catheterization, received treatments such as methylprednisolone, ciclosporin, prednisolone, or off-label dexamethasone. Adverse reactions included subcutaneous hematoma, mood changes, anorexia, epigastric pain, depression, bradycardia, pneumonia, hypertension, liver injury, coronary artery dilatation, hypertrichosis, hyperphagia, hypotension, obesity, sleep apnea syndrome, and various other symptoms. Plasma exchange was administered to some patients, and all patients showed improvement in their macrophage activation syndrome with treatment. [Extracted from the article]
