The article discusses a study that examined the utilization of mental health services for anxiety, mood, and substance disorders in 17 countries in the World Health Organization world mental health surveys. Overviews are presented for the background, methodology, findings, and interpretations of the study. According to the article mental disorders are major causes of disability worldwide, especially in low-income and middle-income countries least able to bear such burdens. The study found that unmet needs for mental health treatment are pervasive and especially concerning in less-developed countries. It is suggested that the alleviation of these unmet needs will require an expansion and optimum allocation of treatment resources.
