The article discusses using the test of treatment method in diagnosing medical conditions when the cause of the illness is uncertain. Whether or not a patient responds to a treatment is considered one way of using test of treatment to primarily treat chronic symptoms. The risks involved in using this diagnostic method include both false negative and false positive results, which can occur because of placebo effects or an ineffective dose of treatment. Recommendations are made for making this diagnostic method effective including using a variety of treatment periods, and using objective measurements to ascertain whether or not the patient has improved.
