Particular attention is paid to examining key texts of Samuel Griswold Goodrich and Jacob Abbot, two of the era's most popular children's authors. Assumptions these authors made about the search for scientific knowledge and its proper relationship to the larger polity as expressed in their writing is assessed. The creation of the character Peter Parley by Goodrich through a series of books is discussed. The creation of the character of Rollo by Abbot in beginning in the 1830s is examined.
