In this article the author discusses Immanuel Kant's "Toward Perpetual Peace" and its historical context. He notes that the circumstances surrounding the Treaty of Basle, signed in 1795 by the Prussian king Frederick William II with France, challenged the limits of peace for Kant. He examines Kant's notion of peace and the ethics of the behavior of the victorious nation following a war.
