The authors discuss their research on the impact of the first phase of the Safer Patients Initiative, a large-scale organization intervention program commissioned by the Health Foundation to enhance patient safety in National Health Service hospitals in Great Britain. They found improvement in the quality of patient monitoring on medical wards in four intervention and 18 control hospitals participating in the program. They also observed a small improvement in staff perceptions of organizational climate and a limited impact on clinical errors and death rates.
