An essay is presented on French views of the South Pacific, and particularly Tahiti, during the period 1768 to 1804. It comments on ideas about South Pacific gender and sexuality during the Enlightenment and the French revolutionary era, noting the work of scholars and ethnographers. Voyages undertaken by explorers Louis-Antoine de Bougainville, Antoine-Raymond-Joseph de Bruni, chevalier d'Entrecasteaux, and Nicolas Baudin are considered.
