The article discusses the history of the New Jersey State Library. Particular focus is given to the development and use of the library's collection during the 18th century. The author uses evidence drawn from the minutes of the New Jersey General Assembly. Details on the library's origins as a legislative reference library are presented. It is suggested that the collection functioned similarly to a state library before it was officially recognized as one.
