The story of Carlo Goldoni's "La Locandiera" could not be simpler. Three noblemen live at the inn run by Mirandolina. Two are already smitten with her charms, but the third affects to hate women. Mirandolina proves herself irresistible, but when the third nobleman's resistance has been worn down by her good linens, savory cooking, singing and a fainting spell, he departs the inn, and Mirandolina is still fated, unromantically, to wed the senior male servant in her employ. Class conquers all. It is as a time machine that "The Mistress of the Inn" has most to offer, a candid camera aimed at the mores and small talk of an era unlighted by the art of the novel.
