The article discusses the relationship between social integration and government postal services in the German States during the 19th century. Particular focus is given to evidence drawn from density maps depicting the total number of post offices in a given area. According to the author, the postal systems lessened regional and geographical barriers to integration. Capital cities and system topology are also discussed.
