In this article from Publishers Weekly, Ricardo Quintana-Vallejo, an English professor at Rhode Island College, explores the significance of coming-of-age graphic novels in communities of color. He compares the traditional linear approach of European bildungsromans to the fragmented storytelling techniques used in contemporary graphic memoirs, such as Thi Bui's The Best We Could Do. Quintana-Vallejo also analyzes the graphic novel Manuelito by Elisa Amado and Abraham Urias, which follows a young Guatemalan refugee. While the analysis can be dense and academic, the article suggests that these graphic novels offer valuable insights into the experiences of displaced individuals. [Extracted from the article]
