The article features the self-funding charity, the London Library, founded by Thomas Carlyle, located at Saint James' Square Garden in London, England. According to head librarian Inez Lynn, the London Library is completely free of trends in library science, such as replacing the entire stock every five years or responding to the latest governmental diktat about the role of the library. She added that the library's focus is on knowledge and not information. The library keeps 98 percent of its stock on view. Its policy is to have books on the history and not the practice of the pure and natural sciences, technology, medicine and law. INSET: Where Next?.
