The article explores the reason behind the decision of Stuttgart, Germany's State Department of Trade and Commerce to send the design exhibition "Design for Use, USA" into the country. The exhibit opened in March 1951 at the Museum of Modern Art at the Landesgewerbemuseum in Stuttgart, West Germany. According to the author, the exhibit represents an episode in the history of the museum's offshore activities, as well as presented Europeans with the first large-scale survey of some of the most prominent U.S. designers in the U.S. at mid-century, including Charles Eames and Eva Ziesel. With the exhibit, it is hoped by Edgar Hotz, president of the department, that Germans will be informed about the key developments in design and manufacture that had occurred since the interwar years.
