The article discusses aspects of business ethics. The article cites writer Adam Smith's assessment of the ethical components of capitalism. Smith defines virtue as "the capacity for entering imaginatively into feelings of others and allowing the sympathy to guide our own actions." In Smith's judgment capitalism was more than a mercantilist alternative because it was intended to produce greater prosperity for a greater number of people. He notes that it is unclear whether economic gain would in the long run outweigh its moral hazards, particularly its tendency to impoverish the human spirit, urban life, and the impersonality of large-scale enterprises.
