The article contrasts the world of accounting in India with that of Great Britain. It discusses how auditing and accounting in India produce a mixture of tradition, English influence and modern Indian thinking. The Indian Institute is small by British standards, having only 17,000 members, but each year some 45,000 students take the examinations. The article suggests that the art of auditing in India is largely Dickensian, and that the standards of the elite compare favorably with anything in the West, but those in middle and lower reaches can be atrocious.
