The women were divided into 3 groups: 1) women who became pregnant while using the IUD, 2) women who experienced metrorrhagia, and 3) women who had IUDs removed for medical reasons. The period during which the IUDs were used varied from 17 days to 17 years. The results indicate that among all the deposits found on the surface of the IUDs (e.g., calciums, magnesium, potassium, and sodium, calcium is the major element existing in 3 forms of calcium carbonate. Calcium increases as the surface deposits increase, but at a decreasing rate. Group 3 had the highest growth rate of calcium. The function of calcium toward improving birth control and the relationship between metrorrhagia and an increase in calcium is discussed. It is suggested that an increase in calcium has no effect upon metrorrhagia and that there is therefore no need to remove the IUD regularly except for medical reasons.
