The seroprevalence of HIV in tuberculosis (TB) patients was double that of the non-tuberculosis patients in Kinshasa, Zaire. 17% of 509 patients were positive by ELISA and by indirect immunofluorescence. Sputum cultures were high in both HIV positive and negative patients. High HIV-1 seroprevalence was reported in TB patients in other developing countries as well: Uganda 58%, Malawi 15%, Brazil 3%, and the Cape Verde Islands 13%. Standard treatment for TB is fine for HIV-1 positives, but patients might relapse after the cessation of therapy. Although seroprevalence seems to be high in TB patients, it is not known whether HIV-1 and TB are related.
