George Armstrong, a physician, was born at Castleton in the Scot's border country in 1719. He was the eighth and last child of the Presbyterian minister, Robert Armstrong, and his second wife Christian. The family hailed from Kelso in Roxburgh, where Robert's father John had practiced for 40 years as a physician, until his death in 1703. When aged 11, Armstrong set out in 1731 for Edinburgh, Scotland, where he studied first the Arts, and then medicine under Professor Alexander Monroe, primus. He was a distinguished student and helped to found the Royal Medical Society of Edinburgh. Qualifying in 1738 at the age of 18, it is thought that he then went into practice, possibly in the Castleton area.
