The article looks at discourses surrounding Popobawa, a supernatural figure in Zanzibari Muslim folklore who is said to sodomize both men and women in their sleep. Particular focus is given to jokes about Popobawa and their relationship to discourses surrounding homosexuality and transgressive gender performance. According to the author, Swahili speakers are able to use supernatural references to discuss transgressive sexuality and express their desires without violating taboos. Spirit possession is also discussed.
