This article is devoted to the political and social situation in the eastern borderlands (Russian and Austrian partitions) at the time of the first partition of Poland-Lithuania in light of reports from papal diplomats. In both cases, the partition was accompanied by the entry of foreign troops into the borderlands and acts of terror against the local population. These acts differed depending on the area. In the Austrian partition, the Catholic Church was placed under civic jurisdiction, copying the situation from the Austrian Empire (under Joseph II), thus breaking all ties between the Church and Polish hierarchy and the authorities. In the Russian partition, special measures were undertaken to stimulate conflicts between Catholics and Orthodox utilising the ancient principle of divide et impera. This policy was also aimed at the positive reception of Catherine’s Orthodox subjects. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
