As the Prussian army under Frederic the Great defeated the French troops in the battle of Rossbach on 5th November 1757, a real military tourism towards Prussia developed after the end of the Seven Years' War in 1763. The French public did not recover from the insult which the descendants of the glorious Louis XIV endured in comparison to a king whose star was constantly rising while the aura of France was deteriorating. As a consequence numerous French officers travelled to Potsdam, Berlin and Schlesien to study the secrets of the military successes of Frederic II. They were seeking knowledge for reform programs in order to improve their own armies and intended to restore the lost splendour of the French army and to regain its primary position in Europe. In this context the trip of Hippolyte-Jean-René d'Emskerque, Marquis de Toulongeon, took place in 1786, the last year of the life of the 'roi connétable'. The account of this journey and particularly the military expertise constitute a typical example both of the areas that interested the French officers and their comparative analysis of the two military systems. It was difficult for them to regard Prussia as a potential paragon contributing to improve their own army. The Marquis de Toulongeon's travel account illustrates a certain type of the circulation of military knowledge between France and Prussia in the second half of the eighteenth century and the boundaries of an efficient exchange of this knowledge. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
