The study deals with the opera Merope by Riccardo Broschi which was performed on the stage of the castle theatre in Jaroměřice during the time of Johann Adam von Questenberg (1678-1752). A work by the author whose music was practically unknown in Vienna, the capital of the Habsburg monarchy, as well as in Central Europe, was performed in Moravia. Two performances are documented in sources: for the first time in the autumn of 1737 and in 1738 for the second time. The collection of preserved sources related to the performances is unique in many respects. It includes the Italian and German librettos from 1737, a score from the collection of sheet music of Count Questenberg and also the letters between the Count and the administrator of the Jaroměřice estate, Mr. Widmann and the letters by the Hofmeister Georg Adam Hoffmann, The exclusivity of this production of Merope is undoubtedly given by the fact that the Questenberg ensemble consisting of his servants and subjects produced a work which was indeed extraordinary in terms of demands for singers (one of the parts was composed by Broschi for Farinelli, one of the most famous castrato of that time).
