In the far past, even before the Philippine nation came to exist, the archipelago was already home to around 171 ethno-linguistic groups; living and associating with each other freely. In establishing the nation that would be called the Philippines, and in establishing the national language to unite all of these ethno-linguistic groups, several problems will arise like what role these groups will play in forming a nation and national language. This paper underlines the examination of being a multilingual nation, something which has to be considered in creating a national language. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
