The given article aims to analyze the translation of autobiographic novel of Vladimir Nabokov “Speak, Memory” into Romanian. It is a well-known fact that the writer represents one of the most famous cases of bilingual authors of the XXth century. His works are distinctive by a combination of features common to both languages - Russian and English. Besides the fact that Russian was his native language, Nabokov knew English at the same level and he could handle the texts in both languages regardless of idioms or other complex expressions. Thus, our investigation consists in analyzing the Romanian version of the Nabokov novel “Speak, Memory”/ “Vorbește, memorie” (“Другие берега”) translated from Russian by Sanda Aronescu. We are going to focus on the suggestions and possible available solutions taking into consideration the author's Russian version of the novel. We would like to specify that the novels “Speak, Memory” and “Другие берега” could be considered, according to the classification proposed by Michel Oustinoff, as a case of re-creational self-translation, fact that presupposes the high degree of independence of the given texts. The writer makes more changes in the process of self-translation, consequently modifying significantly the initial text because he addresses other public and other reader with Vladimir Nabokov's other concerns, knowledge and attitudes towards the important moments from the history of native country. In this work we are going to point out the possible difficulties of translation in the third language that could appear, as well as to emphasize its advantages for the translator - advantages that are overlooked in translating a bilingual text.
