The language and cultural connectedness between Flanders, the Netherlands and South Africa was of great signifi cance to Johan Fleerackers (1931-1989). Flanders was always sympathetic regarding the language and cultural struggle of the Afrikaner. Fleerackers was one of the founder members of the Dutch Language Union. The language and cultural integration of the Netherlands and Flanders was something that he valued. He played a leading role in the General Dutch students' congresses that were held between 1954 and 1961. The aim was to establish closer ties between Flemish, Dutch and South African students. Fleerackers studied during for a few months in South Africa during 1957. He made lifelong friends and developed a greater understanding of the Afrikaans language and culture. During his study sojourn he also made a thorough study of the South African racial question. He was very concerned about the political situation in South Africa and especially South Africa's increasing isolation. In December 1977 the Belgian Government decided to suspend the Cultural Treaty with South Africa. This came as a great shock to Fleerackers. He feared that the suspension could lead to mutual cultural impoverishment and academic isolation. Despite the unsettled international political situation, Fleerackers would endeavour to build bridges between Flanders and South Africa. In November 1986 he was a founder member of an Academic Contact Group to improve academic relations between universities in Flanders and South Africa, despite race or culture. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
