This study aimed to evaluate the background factors of patient counselling (time, evidence basis, knowledge and skills related to patient counselling and the quality of patient counselling) and their connection with the patient counselling competence of nursing staff before they participated in patient counselling training in one university hospital. The data were collected from hospital staff (N=2,773) between August and September 2013 using an electronic questionnaire. In total, 425 nursing staff members responded to the survey. The data were analysed with statistical methods. One third (34%) of the staff spent 1-2 hours of their workday on patient counselling, while nearly one third (30%) used 3-4 hours. Less than half (43%) described the patient counselling they provided as 51-100% evidence-based. Overall, the respondents rated their personal knowledge and skills and the quality of patient counselling at their work unit as good. The respondents rated their personal patient counselling competence (comprehensive patient encounters, implementation and reporting of patient counselling) higher when they spent more time on patient counselling, utilised more evidence- based knowledge, developed related knowledge and skills, and considered the quality of patient counselling at their unit good or excellent. The results can be applied in developing and implementing patient counselling training for staff at the hospital, but also more widely in social and health care. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
Tutkimuksen tarkoituksena oli arvioida potilasohjauksen taustatekijöiden (aika, näyttöön perustuvuus, potilasohjausta koskevat tiedot, taidot ja potilasohjauksen laatu) yhteyttä hoitohenkilökunnan omaan potilasohjausosaamiseen ennen potilasohjauskoulutusta yhdessä yliopistollisessa sairaalassa. Tutkimusaineisto kerättiin sairaalan henkilökunnalta (N=2773) sähköisellä kyselylomakkeella elo-syyskuussa 2013. Kyselyyn vastasi yhteensä 425 hoitohenkilökuntaan kuuluvaa. Aineisto analysoitiin tilastollisin menetelmin. Hoitohenkilökunnasta kolmannes (34%) käytti aikaa potilasohjaukseen 1-2 tuntia työpäivän aikana ja lähes kolmannes (30%) 3-4 tuntia. Vastaajista vajaat puolet (43%) kuvasi oman potilasohjauksensa olevan 51--100% näyttöön perustuvaa. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
