The author analyzes and lights up the views of outstanding Polish historians and social and political figures of the second half of the 19th – the first third of the 20th century, representatives of the Krakow historical school of Y. Shuysky, M. Bobzhinsky, S. Smolki on the Ukrainian Cossacks’ history in the beginning of the 17th century, stated in synthetic efforts of the specified authors. The main task of this article is to define how historians considered the value of the 17th century for historical development of the Polish– Lithuanian Commonwealth, how they estimated and described the beginning of this era and what place was allocated to the Ukrainian Cossacks and its outstanding representatives in his events, in particular to the Ukrainian hetman P.
