The contribution is focused on the research of the borders of a traditional historical urban structure with a modern development. Most valuable historical urban structures are protected as conservation zones or reservations. The boundary of protected areas is in the most cases identical with the boundary of valuable historical urban structures. The subject of our research is the historic core of small towns in Slovakia, with a protected conservation zone area. The chosen conservation zones were selected on the basis of 5 criteria - city status, railway built up to 1945, administrative function in the 2nd half of 20th century, developed industry, number of inhabitants from 10 to 50 thousand. First objective is to create a database of typical contact situations between historical and modern structures. Each typical situation is evaluated individually based on two methods, namely: • Image of the City according to prof. Václav Dvořák • Relation to the Environment according to prof. Eglé Navickiéne In the next step the examples that do not meet the required evaluation criteria are further analyzed and possible solutions for eliminating the negative impact on towns aesthetics are suggested.
