This study explored hospital district board members' understanding about patient safety, the use of patient safety information in decision making, and how visible patient safety is in hospital district board minutes in four hospitals. The research questions were: 1) what do the members of the board of a hospital district understand by the concept of patient safety, 2) how do the members of the HD board recognize the different reporting systems for patient safety, 3) what information and how often the hospital district reports on patient safety, and 4) how the hospital district boards use information on patient safety in decision making? The data consisted of sixteen hospital district board members' interviews and 379 minutes of the hospital district HD boards, which were from years 2011-2016. The results showed that the hospital district board members have inadequate understanding of patient safety. Hospital district board members were to some extent informed about patient safety issues in the hos pital districts, but the information was poorly utilized in decision making. As a conclusion, there is need to increase the understanding of patient safety in the health care district boards and other decision-making bodies in order to better utilize the information reported in guiding clinical work in health care. Tutkimuksessa selvitettiin neljän sairaanhoitopiirin hallitusten jäsenten ymmärrystä potilasturvallisuudesta, potilasturvallisuudesta saadun tiedon käyttöä päätöksenteossa, sekä sitä miten potilasturvallisuus näkyy sairaanhoitopiirien hallitusten pöytäkirjoissa. Tutkimuskysymykset olivat: 1) Mitä sairaanhoitopiirien hallitusten jäsenet ymmärtävät käsitteellä potilasturvallisuus, 2) miten sairaanhoitopiirien hallitusten jäsenet tunnistavat potilasturvallisuuden eri raportointijärjestelmät, 3) mitä tietoa ja kuinka usein sairaanhoitopiireissä raportoidaan potilasturvallisuudesta ja 4) kuinka sairaanhoitopiirien hallitukset hyödyntävät potilasturvallisuudesta saatua tietoa päätöksenteossa? Tutkimuksen aineisto muodostui kuudentoista sairaanhoitopiirin hallituksen jäsenen haastattelusta ja 379 sairaanhoitopiirin hallituksen pöytäkirjasta, jotka olivat vuosilta 2011 -- 2016. Tuloksista ilmeni, että sairaanhoitopiirien hallitusten jäsenillä on varsin puutteellinen ymmärrys potilasturvallisuudesta. Sairaanhoitopiireissä raportoidaan jonkin verran potilasturvallisuuteen liittyviä asioita hallitukselle, mutta tietoa hyödynnetään huonosti hallituksen päätöksenteossa. Tutkimuksen johtopäätöksenä ehdotetaan, että sairaanhoitopiirien hallitusten ja muiden terveydenhuollon järjestämisestä päättävien elinten ymmärrystä potilasturvallisuudesta on lisättävä, jotta raportoituja tietoja voidaan paremmin hyödyntää käytännön työn ohjaamisessa terveydenhuollossa.
