Nostalgia is the means of maintaining the representation of a lost thing and of rediscovering that thing in the past. This nostalgic sentiment has suffused the corpus of Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar (1901-1962), a novelist who lived his childhood and early adolesence during the last years of a disintegrating empire. In Tanpınar's novels, the impact of his consciousness of history and civilization, his understanding of the past, and his feeling of "loss" can be readily seen. In this article, the author's outlook on nostalgia will be considered with respect to how this concept is taken up in his novels Mahur Beste, Sahnenin Dışındakiler, Huzur, Saatleri Ayarlama Enstitüsü, and Aydaki Kadın. This examination will be carried out through the themes of "personal nostalgia", "nostalgia for an epoch", "nostalgia for civilization", and "nostalgia for Istanbul" in Tanpınar's novels.
