This study presents some aspects of the history of the social assistance (philanthropy) in the states of Wallachia and Moldavia from their beginnings until the so-called secularization (confiscation) of the properties of monasteries in the time of Alexandru Ioan Cuza (1859-1866). The first forms of social assistance existed within Orthodox monasteries where the so-called ”bolnițe” i.e. houses for ill people have been built. Along with these houses for ill people, it existed also other church institution like shelters for elderly people, for orphans and for mental illness. Only after 1700 it started the process of the transfer of such institutions from being entirely organized and administrated by church and monasteries to pre-modern social institutions which were founded by local kings and noble people near monasteries and financed by the income of these monasteries. At the beginning of 19th Century, the fist hospital financed with public found was founded. After the secularization of Monasteries properties, all hospital foundations were transferred under the control of the Romanian Parliament. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
