شغل وسائل الاعلام العالمية للمدة ( 9 - 12 حزيران 2014 ) بشكل قل نظيره، موضوع سيطرة تنظيم الدولة الاسلامية في العراق والشام على محافظة الموصل والمدن المجاورة لها في غضون ثلاثة أيام، وأصبح المادة الأولى المتصدرة لنشرات الاخبار والصحف ومحللي مراكز البحوث، كذلك التصريحات الرسمية لمختلف دول العالم التي أوضحت موقفها مما يحدث في العراق خوفاً من توسع تنظيم الدولة الاسلامية في العراق، ولما يمثله من خطر كبير في افكاره المتشددة وممارساته، وقامت وسائل الاعلام بتغطية الانباء التي تحدثت عن سقوط ثاني مدينة في العراق الموصل على أيدي مسلحين لم يحدد بشكل دقيق هويتهم بعد قيامهم بهجوم مباغت وسريع أسقطها وتقدموا على مدن عدة فأسقطوا المدينة تلو المدينة والقرية تلو القرية وبات الخطر يهدد العاصمة بغداد. اختلفت التسميات الى أطلقت على العناصر المسلحة وترددت تسميتهم بالمسلحين ومسلحي تنظيم الدولة في العراق والشام والمتمردون والعصابات المسلحة, ولكن طغى مصطلح تنظيم الدولة الاسلامية وبدأ يطلق بشكل واسع على المسلحين الذي سيطروا على الموصل والمدن الأخرى.
