This article focuses on the Bethulie district in the period 1902 to1907, with specific reference to the economic and social reconstruction of the district after the Anglo-Boer War (South African War). It is thus a micro-history of a specific geographical area in the southern Free State during a specific period. The British government's efforts to ensure economic growth and to address social issues, such as the resettlement of residents on their farms, poverty alleviation, the Kransdraai labour colony, post-war compensation, as well as social grants and pensions, are evaluated critically. Furthermore, the article investigates the challenges that residents experienced in the years after the war, as well as the prominent role that private institutions, the church and community leaders played in reconstructing a post-war Bethulie community. Attention is also given to agriculture, compensation, donations, education, municipal management, social issues and grants. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
[ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
