Ivan Lazhechnikov is the author of historical novels, that are characterized by oppositions of own - foreign and motherland - foreign land. Vivid examples of this are the novels "The House of Ice", "Infidel", and "The Last Novik". In his historical novel "The Last Novik, or the conquest of Livonia during the reign of Peter the Great" from 1833, an important role is played by the opposition of motherland - foreign land, which runs throughout the fate of the main character of the novel, Vladimir. The novel emphasizes the presence of not only physical territorial boundaries, but also spiritual borders. It is this border that Vladimir stands on, that combines the validity of his temporary stay in Livonia, but at the same time leaves him as a Russian patriot, who is suffering from homesickness. The author emphasizes the state of duality in that he gives the hero two names, at the beginning of the story - Voldemar, in the second part of the novel - Vladimir. The character's appearance is also described ambiguously, at first external differences characteristic of the Latvian nationality are emphasized, later the character assumes Russian features. The image of the motherland and the beauty of its landscapes are idealized by the author. However, there is a description of the influence of cruelty and intrigue on behalf of the social environment that forms the character of the hero, which reveals the location of the novel by Ivan Lazhechnikov at the junction of romanticism and realism. The dichotomy of own - strange in the novel is mainly based on stereotypes of the national character and its features. The fate of the author himself, who is an ardent patriot that participated in the Patriotic War, also plays an important role in stereotypical representations. No less important concept for the novel is foreign land; staying abroad negatively affects the spiritual and physical condition of the characters. However, there are characters who form the link between the borders of countries, such as Pastor Glick, who is engaged in the translation of the Bible and his student Kete Rebe, the future wife of Peter the Great. The novel is a combination of the author's fiction and historical facts, his subjective views and real events that took place during the Northern War. This interweaving is facilitated by characters who are classified into real-life, historical personalities and those invented by the author. Contemporaries of Lazhechnikov, such as Yury Samarin and Faddej Bulgarin, also turn to the concepts of motherland and foreign land, for whom Livonia appears to be a combination of different cultures, to which the authors are biased depending on their beliefs.
