Using available digital text corpora, the article aims to give a preliminary survey of the rise, dissemination, and interpretation of the well-known Tagalog phrase "sariling wika" ("[our] own language"). It will then try to argue that this idiom, rather than aiding in the pursuit and development of a Philippine national language, can instead be seen as presenting what may be the most formidable counter-argument against such a project. The article will then go into the possible authorship of a poem falsely attributed to Rizal, "Sa Aking mga Kabata" (To my fellow children), which has played a key role in immortalizing the phrase "sariling wika".
