The study deals with the professional life of the western Ukrainian composer, conductor and music teacher Mykola Kolessa (1903-2006), who studied in Prague over the years 1924-1931, in particular in the conservatory in the master's composition class of the Czech composer Vítězslav Novák. After his return to his home country, he became one of the leading figures of the local Ukrainian music scene in Lviv. He worked as a conductor in the Lviv philharmonic orchestra as well as with the theatre of opera and ballet. He taught conducting at the Conservatory of Mykola Lysenko and trained a number of renowned Ukrainian conductors, in particular Stefan Turchak. He held the position of chancellor of the conservatory over the years 1953-1965. He is classified with the modernists in terms of his work as a composer, having primarily been influenced by impressionism, neofolklorism and neoclassicism. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
