“[M]et ʼn rilling” – “Die waternooi” by Marie Linde in the light of affect theory and canonising processes In this article affect theory is the theoretical basis for a reading of “Die waternooi” by Marie Linde. Linde was very popular in the twenties, thirties and fourties, when Afrikaans prose was in its groundbreaking phase. She was active during the periods of “selfstandigwording” (1900–1930) and “verdere verbreiding” (1930–1955) (Kannemeyer 1984) of the Afrikaans literary tradition. Nowadays Linde will be classified as an exponent of popular writing of her time. It is therefore significant to determine to what extent she dealt with issues that would nowadays be part of the theory of affect. The narrative and the author are also placed within the context of canonising processes and a case is formulated for a re-evaluation of Linde’s position within Afrikaans literary history.
