This article compares the ability of the Revised Beta Examination and the Shipley-Hartford test to estimate Verbal, Performance, and Full Scale Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS) IQs in a state hospital population. Subjects included all patients admitted to Norristown State Hospital, Norristown, Pennsylvania between October 1, 1967, and June 1, 1968, who received a WAIS during the course of an individual psychological evaluation. Comparison of estimates of intellectual range yielded no significant difference between the Shipley and Beta tests. The Shipley correctly classified 38 of 78 subjects, while the Beta was accurate in 30 of 61 cases.
