The article focuses on two studies, which assesses the effect of differences in level of associative interference in a word association task. Both male and female schizophrenics were tested in both studies. The process and reactive schizophrenic groups did not differ significantly in age, intelligence quotient, level of physiological arousal, months of lifetime institutionalized, or current symptom severity based on IMPS rating. The combined results of both studies support the hypothesis that reactive schizophrenics are affected more strongly by response interference than are process schizophrenics and that these results can be applied to both sexes and to patients on and off antipsychotic medication.
