The article examines the self-report of depressive symptoms in low back pain patients. The existence of a relationship between depression and chronic pain has been proposed by a number of researchers. However, there seems to be little consensus among researchers as to the exact nature of this relationship. One critical problem in the study of depression in chronic pain patients is that measures of depression may be confounded by the patient's medical condition. Specifically, a number of self-report instruments used in the assessment or depression, actually may be measuring certain somatic complaints that may result from the patient's physical condition regardless of the existence of a depressive disorder.
